About half a mile southwest of Masontown are the Bretz coke ovens, hundreds of beehive ovens built for the Elkins Coal and Coke Company in the early 1900s and now a National Historic Landmark. The company's restored 1907 stone building in town serves as a stop on the Deckers Creek Rail-Trail. Coal shaped much of the town, and many homes date from those working years.
