Granville began in 1814, when Felix Scott got a charter for a town called Grandville on the flat ground across the Monongahela from Morgantown, where Dents Run meets the river. It grew with coal mining on the west side of the river, the trolley line in 1910 and the Monongahela Railway in 1912, and it incorporated as a town in 1947.
